The GLBT Suicide Awareness Initiative (GLBTSAI) is operated by Switchboard of Miami. It was founded in 2005 as the Kevin Cline* Suicide Awareness Initiative (KCSAI) by Edward Straub and the staff of the Switchboard of Miami.
In 2006 Switchboard of Miami renamed the Initiative the GLBT Suicide Awareness Initiative (GLBTSAI) to highlight our services to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community.
Also in 2006 the GLBTSAI began it's collaboration with The Britten Foundation founded by Joe Soler of Ft. Lauderdale to honor the life of his partner Art Britten. Joe's efforts through "Woof Fest.com" have brought international attention to the issue of suicide in the GLBT community.
* Kevin Cline took his life on September 24, 2002, by jumping from a 10-story building. He had told friends he had thought about “disappearing.” He talked about his loneliness. Drugs were not an issue. He had mentored many though their addictions and had created a good life after a very challenging childhood. His cries for help were heard, but his friends didn’t recognize them as such. The world lost a beautiful, constructive man that day … one we may not have had to lose.
